Want to know about the most stunning mosque in Delhi? Jama Masjid is known very well as the biggest and most beautiful mosque present in Delhi, India. In Persian language, is has another name that is Masjid Jahan-Numa. It means ‘reflection of world’. It is present in the start of Chawri Bazaar. This bazaar is the top busiest bazaar in Delhi. Shah Jahan (Mughal emperor) made this mosque during his era. Its construction was started in the year 1650.
Short Historical Perspective
Cost for its construction was more than 10 Lac. 10 Lac was a very big thing during those days. Masjid has a very unique name. ‘Jama’ word means the Jumah prayer of Muslims which is offered on Friday. There is a very beautiful closet present towards the mosque’s north gate. It has houses for so many relics. There is a very special copy of Quran. This copy was written very beautifully on the skin of deer. This copy is preserved here in this mosque. Main hall for prayer along with the country yard of this masjid has space for round about 30,000 worshipers.
Three awesome gates along with four long towers are present here with this mosque. Two tall minarets are also adding more beauty to this masjid. All these minarets are 40 meters long. These long minarets were constructed with great effort by using white marble. Red sand stones were also used for the construction purpose. A beautiful courtyard also grabs the attention of visitors. This country yard is rectangular in shape and is 75 meters long. Its width is approximately 66 meters. A western chamber is also there. This chamber has support of pillars. These pillars are 22 in number and all are carved and designed beautifully. All these carvings are based on the traditions of Hindus.
Jama Masjid is also known for its great architecture. Country yard of this masjid reflects the essence of Mughal era. You can access this country yard from south, east and north as well. Northern gate of the mosque is very famous as it has 389 steps. These steps grab the visitors who come here to offer the prayer. Similarly, 554 steps are there towards the southern side. Eastern side is on top in this regard as it has 774 steps. Main purpose for these steps is to give enough space to food stalls over there. These steps also give sufficient place to street entertainers. There are eight beautiful domes present on the roof of this mosque. Purple as well as white marble was used for the décor purpose of these domes. Two minarets are adding beauty to the mosque and these two are 130 feet in high. White and black marble is used for the making of floor over there.
As the Jama Masjid is there since the Mughal era, it has lost its original form. Now the mosque is under the process of renovation. Majority of the work has been completed. Still, some area of the mosque needs to be repaired or renovate.
